Meals

CAAC administers a variety of meal programs for seniors. These meals are provided through funds from the Older Americans Act, contributions from nursing homes and hospitals, other local service providers and private donations. Voluntary contributions for these meals are encouraged.

Senior Center Meals

Hot lunch meals are provided Monday through Friday at most of the 20 senior centers administered by CAAC. Click here to find the senior center nearest you. The meals are a major program of the Older Americans Act and are provided through a statewide contract with food vendor Valley Services, Inc. Each meal meets at least one-third of the daily recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for seniors.

Home-Delivered Meals

For seniors who are unable to attend a senior center due to physical or mental incapacities, hot home-delivered lunches are available in some areas. These meals are provided through the senior centers and from donations by some local nursing homes and hospitals, and most are delivered by volunteers.

Because there is such a great demand for this service and funding is limited, priority is given to those in greatest need.

If no meals are available due to limited funding, seniors and/or their families or other sponsors may purchase meals for a nominal cost – see Private Donation Meals below.

Frozen Meals

In some communities the daily hot meals are unavailable for delivery, usually due to the lack of volunteers or other resources for the delivery. Another option to meet needs of homebound seniors in these areas is a weekly delivery of five to seven frozen meals. These meals also meet at least one-third of the daily RDA. Breakfast meals are also available when coupled with lunch meals. The senior receiving frozen meals must have adequate refrigerator and freezer space to store the meals and a microwave or conventional oven to prepare them.

Private Donation/Sponsored Meals

As mentioned above, the demand for home-delivered meals is greater than the resources available to meet the needs. When all government-funded meals are expended, CAAC can offer meals at a nominal cost for seniors and/or their families or other private sponsors. Private donations are desperately needed to meet the needs of hundreds of seniors who are on waiting lists. Volunteers are also needed to deliver meals to the homebound.

If you are interested in sponsoring a meal for a homebound senior or in volunteering to deliver meals, please contact CAAC at 334-240-4666 or 800-264-4680. You may also respond via this website. Click here to make a donation. Click here to volunteer.
