Insurance Counseling

CAAC administers the State Health Insurance Program (SHIP) to assist Medicare beneficiaries in the tri-county region. SHIP is funded by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and is administered by the Alabama Department of Senior Services and Alabama Area Agencies on Aging.

SHIP staff and trained volunteers can provide education, counseling and information concerning:

  • Medicare – help you understand your benefits and assist in specific areas such as claims, appeals and other similar issues
  • Medicare Advantage (Part C)
  • Medicare’s Prescription Drug Benefit (Part D) – help you make an informed choice about the plan that best suits your needs
  • Medicare Supplemental Insurance (Medigap)
  • Prescription Assistance Programs
  • Long-term care and payment options
  • Healthcare rights and protections
  • Low-income assistance programs

CAAC’s SHIP program also administers the Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP), which is a volunteer-based program. SMP's goal is to educate seniors in Alabama about Medicare and Medicaid fraud, waste and abuse. Click here to learn more about SMP.

For more information about what the SHIP program can do for you, contact CAAC at 334-240-4666 or 800-264-4680.
