Across the U.S. more than 6 million children are being raised in households headed by grandparents and other relatives. As the children’s parents struggle with substance abuse, mental illness, incarceration, economic hardships, divorce, domestic violence and other challenges, these caregivers provide a vital safety net to children inside and outside of the foster care system. In recognition of the growing needs of these grandparents and other relative caregivers, the National Family Caregiver Support Program in the Older Americans Act included authorization for limited funding to provide support and assistance to this special group of caregivers.
