Aging services and programs are provided through a network of federal, state and local agencies and organizations. On the federal level the lead agency is the Administration on Aging (AOA) which is a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. AOA is the agency charged by Congress to administer the Older Americans Act. Click here for more information. On the state level, the Alabama Department of Senior Services (ADSS) is the State Unit on Aging which administers the Older Americans Act and other state and federal programs for seniors in Alabama. ADSS oversees the Area Agencies on Aging. Click here for more information on ADSS. On the regional and local level, aging programs are administered by Area Agencies on Aging (AAA). Alabama is divided into thirteen (13) regions, and in each region a local organization has been designated by ADSS to serve as the AAA. The AAA serves as the focal point on aging to coordinate public and private resources to help foster the independence and enhance the quality of life for the seniors of that region. CAAC is the Area Agency on Aging for the Central Alabama region of Autauga, Elmore and Montgomery Counties, and provides services directly as well as through contracts with other local organizations.
